Groundwork Birmingham & Solihull worked with 10 schools local to the Jewellery Quarter to educate and raise awareness around the importance of Warstone lane and Key Hill cemeteries as key heritage sites in Birmingham. Artwork was produced which will be incorporated into permanent information panels designed by Groundwork Birmingham & Solihull.
Initial research involved the children, from years three to six, in visits to the cemeteries, the Jewellery Quarter Museum and tours of the area, noting the shops, workshops and the pavement trail. The children then produced sketches, drawings, paintings and both stone and leaf rubbings.
Explaining the decision to involve pupils from local schools, Groundwork Education Worker, Alison Farrell, said ‘Exposing young people to their local heritage is an excellent way of giving them pride in Birmingham. The children have learned about the wildlife, and the flora and fauna growing in the cemeteries, as well as the different textures, styles and patterns used on the gravestones in each of the cemeteries.
