Groundwork employs a team of 3 qualified IEMA (Institute of Environmental Management & Assessment) registered professionals with extensive experience on providing environmental business advice to businesses from valid industry sectors.  We are part of a regional team operating across the West Midlands but specialise in local delivery of the programmes.

Groundwork’s Environmental Business Services team has worked with partners such as Stoke-on-Trent City Council to make businesses more aware of how their operations can be designed to achieve a more sustainable environment.

Many companies do not fully understand the environmental and financial implications of poor waste systems

Steve Smith, Assistant Director Economic and Cultural Services, said, “The work of organisations such as Groundwork has shown that businesses really can benefit in financial terms from becoming more aware of environmental issues. Reducing costs through minimising waste, recycling and energy efficiency can have a positive impact on business performance, as well as raising the profile of the company with suppliers, customers and the wider community.”

Projects & Case Studies

The Bridge–it Programme

Environmental business assistance and support for small, medium enterprises (SMEs) and training for environmental champions.

Bridge-it is a regional project focusing on raising businesses' awareness of environmental issues and how they can save money through being trained on resource efficiency and other skills which would help them to manage their environmental impacts in a more sustainable way. Businesses will gain positive changes in environmental performance and our services are catered to providing guidance to your specific queries from any industrial sector.

The EBS team give on-site support to companies on environmental issues

Environmental issues are business critical. Waste and inefficient processes mean lost profit. Poor housekeeping leads to pollution incidents which could see businesses in court facing a crippling fine. Businesses that cannot demonstrate that they are environmentally aware are losing their place in supply chains to be replaced by businesses that can.

Environmental pressures are starting to become more widespread and public knowledge has increased regarding the extent of non-compliance with regulatory controls. Breaking legislation through environmental crimes such as pollution, graffiti, and fly tipping can no longer be regarded as minor offences. Environmental sentencing through penalties are becoming noticeable, this also gives you bad publicity.

Groundwork West Midlands EBS has an impressive record of delivering environmental business services in partnership with private, public and voluntary sector clients.

Groundwork West Midlands EBS has developed a range of products and services that will help businesses to become more profitable and sustainable. We have devised three simple levels of support – Introductory, Intermediate and Advanced Services. Most of our clients progress through these levels, building up confidence, knowledge and experience as they go.

We combine management and technical consulting skills in multi - disciplinary teams to help clients achieve practical and workable solutions to problems and issues you face either through best practice techniques or low cost savings.

Groundwork West Midlands EBS has developed a programme called the Bridge-it programme. Bridge-it is a Environmental Initiative offering advice, coaching and support for businesses through funding support agencies such as Regional Development Agency and Europe, delivering services across the West Midlands through an extensive partnership network.

The Bridge-it programme has been formulated to help companies across the West Midlands ‘bridge the gap’ between where they are and where the law and best practice say they must be. It provides subsidised environmental support and training to identify your needs; sets realistic objectives; and then helps you to achieve them. You will also gain direct access to partners such as Staffordshire Business Environment Network, Envirowise, NISP, Local Authorities, Chamber of Commerce, the Environment Agency, Universities Colleges and Private sector: blue chip companies and Small to Medium Sized Enterprises (SMEs).

Bridge-it is specifically aimed at small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) and Large companies to offer tailored and customised services to meet your company’s needs. Our highly skilled team are able to offer a wide variety of high quality services at a substantially subsidised rate. Services range from short tailored courses and workshops to implementing international standard for Environmental Management Systems ISO 14001, we provide advice and guidance tailored specifically for the company needs, we can fit the size, complexity and aspirations of your company.

The vast knowledge of services we can provide start from environmental queries, environmental policy, baseline review, we can take you through an action plan audit preparation for Environmental Systems, pre-certification audit, energy, waste and legislative compliance.

We also provide the wider agenda of environmental issues such as Corporate Social Responsibility by linking programmes into our local projects within Groundwork through Community, Youth, Education and Land programmes.
